Well, Kalapana was a famous black sand beach, but it was covered in lava. Actually, you get a good look at it in the Chris Isaak video with Helena Christiansen. Those billowing clouds are actually the steam from really hot lava flowing into the ocean. A few days later, there was no beach. Punalu’u on the island of Hawaii is still around. Famous for bread, if you live in the islands.
There is at least one black sand beach on Maui: Waianapanapa near Hana. You also see red sand beaches (eroded cinders), white sand beaches (eroded coral), and even some green sand that contains olivine. Olivine is a mineral that comes from below the earth’s crust and also forms August’s green gemstone: peridot.
To the best of my knowledge, the only back sand beaches are on the Big Island of Hawaii. That is because it has the only active volcano. The black sand comes from the action of the waves on the cooled lava, breaking it down after years & years.

Aloha,
There are no black sand beaches on Oahu, just the Big Island (the island of Hawaii) and Maui. On the Big Island there is a black sand cove located at One Puako Bay. Check out this gorgeous photo..

Punaluu Black Sand Beach near Pahala is famous for its sea turtles which thrive in the cove.

Unfortunately Kalapana Black Sand beach is no more, but at least I was lucky enough to see it! This unique black sand beach in the Kalapana Park area was a beautiful feature of the Big Island until a lava flow from the still-active Kilauea volcano slowly but surely reclaimed the entire area.

I think the only black sand beaches are on the big Island. I don’t recall seeing any black sand beaches on Oahu when I was there.
