Jacksonville is the largest city in Florida in terms of both area and population. In 2006, Jacksonville ranked as the US 12th most populous city.

The settlement that became Jacksonville was founded in 1791 as Cowford because of its location at a narrow point in the river where cattle once crossed.

In 1822, a year after the US acquired Florida from Spain, the city was renamed for the first military governor of the Florida Territory, General Andrew Jackson, who would later be elected President of the US.

Tallest building is the Bank of America Tower. It has a height of 617 ft (188 m) and includes 42 floors. Other notable structure is 37-story Modis Building.

The city center includes the Jacksonville Landing and the Jacksonville Riverwalks.

The Landing is a popular riverfront dining and shopping venue, accessible by River Taxi from the Southbank Riverwalk.

Friendship Fountain, landmark was built in 1965 and promoted as the Worlds Tallest and Largest fountain.

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens boasts the second largest animal collection in the state.

Andrew Jackson Statue – Jackson was the 7th President of the US (1829 – 1837). He was military governor of Florida (1821).

Jacksonville Beach(Jax Beach),where you will find miles of uncrowded white sandy beaches, is located east of Jacksonville.

Beach is a business, resort, and residential community offering oceanfront hotels, great dining, shopping from antiques to art galleries, an eighteen-hole municipal golf course, family entertainment, festivals, concerts and much more.
